Besides Boeing 737-300, VARIG also operated four Boeing 737-400 between 2000 and 2002 and between 2004 and 2006. Boeing 737-400 is a stretched version thus it can carry more passengers. VARIG's B737-400 were configured with 142 or 156 seats. Those aircraft complemented Boeing 737-300 on some domestic routes with higher demand.
The first four units (PP-VQQ, PP-VQR, PP-VQS
and PP-TEO) were received in June 2000 and all of them previously
operated at Transbrasil. However, the financial crisis made VARIG
withdraw them all in 2002 and return them to the lessor.
As a way to make up for the non-receipt of more Boeing 737-800 units,
VARIG acquired four Boeing 737-400 units in 2004. PP-VTM arrived in
May and PP-VTN and PP-VTO arrived in June, all previously operated
on Asiana Airlines. PP-VTL arrived in August and previously operated
at Futura International. These four units remained in the fleet
until the end of VARIG's activities in June 2006.
