In late 60s VARIG started search for an aircraft to replace DC-3. One option was Beechcraft 99 Airliner, produced by Beechcraft. The 99 Airliner version had new engines Pratt & Whitney PT-6A, larger fuselage and more internal space with capacity for about 15 passengers. One unit was acquired by VARIG in August 1968, registered as PP-VDY. The aircraft operated until December 1968 in VARIG's regionanl routes. However the aircraft was considered too small. VARIG returned the Beechcraft 99 and then selected HS-748 "Avro" as DC-3 successor.
